We are looking for a Staff Registered Nurse for the Mother Baby Unit at St. Mary Medical Center.
 
Location:  Apple Valley, CA
Work Schedule:   Full time - 72 Biweekly Hours
Shift:  12-hour, Nights
 
Job Summary:
Within the identified roles of Practitioner, Teacher and Leader, the staff Registered Nurse provides collaborative and comprehensive care based on patient and/or family needs. The staff Registered Nurse implements and evaluates care delivery based on predicted outcomes while anticipating potential responses provides assessment, treatment and care throughout the hospital and outlying clinics. The staff Registered Nurse will practice in accordance with all regulatory, professional, legal and hospital policies. The Staff Registered Nurse works independently under limited supervision directly reporting to the Unit/Department Supervisor, Director of Assistant Vice President.
 
Essential Functions: 
  • Performs a complete patient assessment that encompasses the patient’s physical, physiological, emotional and spiritual status.
  • Formulates a nursing diagnosis based upon the patient assessment and develops and implements an individualized patient care plan that is based upon collaboration with the patient and the assessment of the patient.
  • Performs procedures/treatments, administers medications and provides nursing care based upon established clinical practice (policy and procedures), the patients plan of care and physician orders.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan through observation of the patient’s physical condition and behavior, signs and symptoms of illness and reactions to the treatment. Through communication with the patient and the health team members, including shift to shift report modifies the plan as needed.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements the individual patient/family education plan together with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provides and documents patient/family education within the Registered Nurse’s scope of practice. Communicates effectively with members of the health care team with regard to patients condition and needs.
  • Acts as the patient/family advocate as circumstances require by initiating action to improve health care or to change decision or activities which are against the interest or wishes of the patient or family and by giving the patient/family the opportunity to make informed decisions about health care before it is provided.
  • Coordinates discharge planning of the simple patient and obtain necessary orders for discharge.
  • Delegates tasks to Team Members based on scope of practice, competencies and qualifications.
  • Effectively supervises care being given by Nurses Aides, Licensed Vocational Nurses and Student Nurses.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees and student nurses.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities.
  • Participates in continuing education programs offered by SMMC. Assists and participates in committee work as requested. Is an effective member of the healthcare team and participates in 75% of department and unit staff meetings.
  • Knows staff nurse is a team member in the Utilization Management process.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary conferences.
  • Documents patient specific data/information concisely and thoroughly, according to hospital and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Completed all CEU requirements in accordance with RN license renewal.
  • Meets performance standards for the Registered Nurse.
  • Obtains NRP certification within three months of hire and presents every other year renewal, prior to expiration date. Maintains licensure and BLS documentation prior to expiration dates.
  • Attends hospital-required training and in-services. Completes annual review components prior to annual anniversary date. Independently maintains annual educational log and presents completed forms and CEU documents before or during the annual performance review.
  • Demonstrates positive verbal and non-verbal communication with peers, co-workers, supervisors, administration, patients, visitors, and physicians. Willingly participates in quality improvement root-cause analysis and/or interpersonal communication resolution sessions, as requested.
  • Demonstrates skill in application of, physical/gestational age observation for the newborn and knowledge of current breastfeeding techniques for the postpartum patient.
  • Acts as resource person, registry, float personnel, and students in the interpretation, rationale, and the treatment of the childbearing family. Completes or Co-signs necessary documentation.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees and/or trainees.
  • Schedules and meets with Unit Supervisor at least quarterly to discuss individual performance and unit strategic plans.
  • Maintains 5 of 15 CEUs in Postpartum or Newborn Care.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and basic understanding of the care necessary, the hemodynamic changes in the postpartum patient, and the adaptation needs of the neonate in transition, sign of and reporting requirements of potential child abuse, and awareness of potential infant abduction situations.
  • Attends at least 50% of staff meetings and medical center and/or unit sponsored outreach in-services, and Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity presentations. Provides documentation that minutes for staff meetings are read and understood for any meetings not attended. Reads and initials communication books entries and/or memos, and provides in-service records for any unit sponsored poster in-services presented. Completes any self-study educational packet and present post-test within 30 days of distribution.
  • Leads the unit rounds with physicians, administration, and/or the multidisciplinary team. Coordinates the completion of the multidisciplinary care plan upon admission and ongoing thereafter.
  • Initiates discharge planning upon admission and provides educational information throughout the hospital stay. Provides maintenance of the continuum of care following discharge.
  • Provides input into the development of the annual educational calendar.
  • Initiates and presents at least two care conferences or staff in-services.
  • Documentation of the medical record is complete and per standards including appropriate documentation of restraints. Participates in the monitoring of compliance and peer education including completion of the performance improvement audits within 15 days following the month assigned.
  • Maintains equipment/safety and supply checks during scheduled shifts. Maintains overall cleanliness to patient area, work station, and supply areas per regulation.
  • Initiates at least two policy and procedure reviews including researching and referencing standards or journal research. Assists with other policy and procedure reviews.
  • Is an active member of at least one unit based and/or medical center committee (policy and procedure, quality care, patient education/clinical pathway, caregiver performance). Provides input to other unit based committees.
  • Provides immediate information to the Team Leader regarding changes in the patient condition and provides accurate data about the patient’s acuity level for staffing purposes.
  • Participates in mock codes (pink or blue).
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of the specific BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL needs to care for or interact with the neonate, adolescent mother, and childbearing family.
  • Participates in 10 hours of community service, education and/or professional outreach (Voluntary).
  • Annual Evaluation:
    • Completes annual “Department Specific Focused Competencies”.
    • Demonstrates ongoing education and training to maintain job skills and knowledge (see caregiver education record).
    • Completes annual HealthStream and Caregiver Health Requirements.
  • Assists physician with special tests and procedures.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the changes of the obstetrical patient.
  • Demonstrates the ability to coordinate patient care including educational flowsheet with discharge planning.
  • Initiates ward conferences when appropriate.
  • Acts as resource for care of postpartum patients.
  • Assists with completion of performance improvement audits.
  • Demonstrates understanding of obstetrical patient needs.
  • Assists with orientation of new personnel and students.
  • Assists with developing, reviewing and revising policies as they apply to the postpartum area.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to care for patients and approach their clinical responsibilities from a developmental, age specific perspective.
 
SKILLS: 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, personal computer, printer, telephone, nurse call system).
  • Basic knowledge of nursing procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic nursing and unit specific equipment.
  • Demonstrates competencies in IV initiation and management.
 
Minimum Position Requirements:
Education:
  • Associate's Degree
  • Coursework/Training - Other training as specific to unit requirements.
  • Coursework/Training - Environmental Orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Coursework/Training - General RN competency within 30 days of hire.
  • Coursework/Training - Unit Specific competency within 90 days of hire.
  • Coursework/Training - Preceptor / Mentor: Preceptor Mentor competency prior to first schedule Preceptor/Mentor shift.
  • Coursework/Training  - Rapid Response: Role Specific competency prior to first schedule RRT shift.
  • Post-Partum competency within 90 days of hire.
Experience:
  • Preceptor / Mentor: 18 months experience in hospital nursing practice.
  • Rapid Response: 18 months experience in critical care area
  • Team Leader:
    • 2 years of recent RN experience in an acute care hospital.
    • 6 months recent experience in the hospital department involved or in a different department, either at St. Mary Medical Center or elsewhere, with similar patient care responsibilities.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current California Registered Nurse License by evidence of Primary Source Verification.
  • Current BLS.
  • Other certifications as specific to unit requirements.
  • NRP certification within 6 months of hire.
  • PALS certification within 6 months of hire.
 
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Experience: 2 years experience in a hospital environment.
 
 
St. Mary Medical Center (SMMC) is an acute care hospital with 213 beds and over 1,750 employees making it one of the region's largest employers serving communities of the High Desert. The facility was constructed in 1956 and joined the St. Joseph Health System in 1992.

This facility has the only Neonatal Care Unit in the High Desert Accredited by California Children Services and has been granted approval as a Special Hospital with the California Children's Services Community Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. St. Mary was accredited as a primary Stroke Receiving Center in 2018, the only stroke-receiving center in the High Desert.
