Job Summary: The Medical Librarian is responsible for providing library and information services to the Covenant Health System, as part of the larger Providence St. Joseph Health System Library Services team.  The Librarian will work collaboratively with health professionals to perform a variety of professional librarian activities in areas such as reference, research assistance, outreach, instruction, collection development, and evidenced-based decision making.  The Medical Librarian serves as the primary reference and research contact for medical staff, senior management staff, nurses, other hospital professional staff, students, nursing faculty, patients and their families.  Minimal supervision.

Essential Functions: 
1. Administers library services and activities according to hospital and departmental procedures.  Meets accreditation requirements of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the National League for Nursing and the Board of Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas. 
2. Supports evidence based practice, quality care, education, and research by providing professional information services such as reference interviews, custom literature searches, and subject alerts.
3. Instructs and assists customers in the use of the library’s equipment, catalogs, databases, public website, internet, and/or database applications. Contributes to the development, assessment and delivery of library programs, services, and initiatives in information literacy and other areas.
4. Provides in-person library operations on a day to day basis, performs opening and closing duties, serves as a representative of the library to other departments and groups; and establishes and maintains positive relationships.
5. Participates in the maintenance and provision of print and e-resources to meet the health information needs of medical, nursing, other hospital professionals, students and all support staff.  Assures that these information resources and materials are current and available for use.  
6. Evaluates library services on a continuing basis and prepares quarterly and annual statistics on library activities. 
7. Assures that materials are catalogued and classified in a timely manner according to the Medical Subject Headings and the National Library of Medicine Classification System. 
8. Actively maintain current knowledge and expertise in information trends in librarianship and the health sciences

Minimum Position Qualifications:  
Education:  Master’s in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, Masters in Information Science or related information degree or degree in progress.  Academic degree in biology or health sciences, or demonstrated equivalent gained through experience in an academic medical or science library.

Preferred Position Qualifications:  
Health sciences library experience 
Experience with evidence-based medicine/evidence-based practice
Membership in Medical Library Association's Academy of Health Information Professional (AHIP)
