We are looking for an Medical Director for the Administration Department at St. Jude Medical Center.

Location: Fullerton, CA 
Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly hours
Shift: 8-hour, Days 

Job Summary:
Primary accountability for the Medical Director is to promote high value care, efficient utilization of resources, effective patient flow, and appropriate length of stay management at the medical center by engaging with physicians, physician leadership, the Director of Care Management, and executive leadership, in particular the CMO, CNO, and CFO. Principal responsibilities of the Medical Director shall be to provide clinical expertise to Care Management in the form of strategic partnership as well as in the addressing of escalations that include admission status determinations, delays in discharge, and the providing of clinical input for denial management. The Medical Director shall also oversee the Utilization Management Committee at the medical center, while also serving as Physician Advisor for Clinical Documentation Integrity to ensure optimal clinical documentation in the medical record. This position is intended to be a full-time administrative position and shall not replace or usurp the authority of the Chief of Staff, the Medical Staff department or Medical Staff committees as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee, direct and integrate all aspects of Utilization Management house wide.
  • Provide clinical support to Care Management.
  • Provides clinical support to Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) team.
  • Facilitate and further develop strong collaborative and positive mutually supported relationships between the medical center and its physicians in order to improve clinical quality, resource utilization and increase value while maintaining and improving our mission outcomes (goals of sacred encounters, perfect care and healthiest communities) for the Medical Center. Interact directly with staff and physicians to optimize patient flow. Regular rounding on floors to understand work flows and optimize utilization of all resources.  Direct participation in complex cases to facilitate optimal placement. 
  • Provide support to the Pharmacy department in establishing an antibiotic stewardship program and carrying out real-time dialogs with physician to further the program.
  • Facilitate an environment reliant on data driven quality improvement processes to achieve exceptional clinical quality outcomes.  Develop and implement systems and processes that ensure the highest quality of care and patient safety with evidence-based medicine standards.
  • Integrate clinical initiatives, quality improvement and best practices to achieve exceptional patient service, quality and safety while ensuring value.
  • Collaborate with medical directors/physician advisors and administration in providing direction and assistance to clinical departments and hospital administration in evaluating new clinical programs and technologies designed to enhance the care and safety of patients.
  • Facilitate integration of technology and medical applications with medical staff input and leadership to enhance patient care and patient safety.
  • Collaborate with medical directors/physician advisors and administration in developing and maintaining prioritized goals, objectives and work plans including the definition of outcome measures, which are consistent with the mission, vision and overall strategic plan.
  • In partnership with the CNO, assists Hospitalists and Intensivists escalations related to patient care.
  • Oversees, directs, and integrates all aspects of the Hospitalists and Intensivists contracts.
  • Represent the medical center at regional meetings that relate to patient flow and LOS management
  • In partnership with the Director of Care Management, promote productive and sustainable partnerships and relationships with leaders of post-acute facilities that include SNFs, Subactue facilities, and LTACHs
  • In partnership with Heritage Foundation, ensure optimal efficiencies in transitions of care for Heritage patients within the IDS
  • Interact directly with staff and physicians to optimize patient flow.  Direct participation in complex cases to facilitate optimal placement. 
  • Regular rounding on floors to understand work flows and optimize utilization of all resources.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of utilization management and review essential to operations management and to clinical improvement.
  • An understanding of the dynamics of health care industry and its effects on all stakeholders.
  • Able to develop and maintain strong, effective relationships with the medical staff, Board of Trustees and hospital management.
  • Able to motivate and assist medical staff leadership to ensure adherence to utilization management, clinical documentation, and other legal/regulatory requirements.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education

  • M.D. From an accredited program.
  • D.O. From an accredited program.
  • Coursework/Training - Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited Residency program.

Experience

  • Exemplary medical practice history as attested by peers.
  • Participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities.
  • Clinical practice of medicine.
  • Active member in good standing on St. Jude Medical Center Medical Staff.
  • Experience with care management and utilization review.

Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Current valid license in the State of California.
  • Board certified in an ABMS clinical specialty.
  • Medical Staff Membership strongly recommended

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree in Management, Business, or Public Health.

Experience: Group practice experience.
