We are looking for a Food Service Worker I - United Steelworkers for the Administration at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA 
Work Schedule: Part time - 40 Biweekly hours
Shift: 8 hour, Days

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Food Service Director and Food Service Supervisor, performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the assembly and distribution of patient meals.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares tray line for:

 • Cafeteria Services: Cafeteria meal service according to selected menu items.
 • Patient Services: Patient tray assembly and assemble patient trays according to prescribed diet order.

  • Collects appropriate food items from refrigerator, salad area, etc. in preparation for patient or cafeteria meal service.
  • Under guidance of a diet aide, assembles patient trays in accordance with patient menus and policy and procedures.
  • Maintains condiments for patient or cafeteria meal service.
  • Transports food cart(s) to patient areas, passes trays and collects dirty dishes/trays from patient's room and returns food cart to dish room area at designated time.

Patient Services:  Delivers late, hold and new admit trays. Collects dirty dishes and trays located in floor pantry areas.
Cafeteria Services:  Maintains cleanliness of cafeteria dining room. Collects dirty dishes and trays and takes to dish room.

Patient Services:  Assembles and delivers appropriate floor supplies and nourishment to designated nursing station.
Cafeteria Services:  Stocks all condiments, cups, lids, plates, bowls and plastic ware for before and during cafeteria service.

Patient Services:  Breaks down food carts, stacks trays and dishes and disposes of trash and garbage in accordance with established policy and procedure.
Cafeteria Services:  Breaks down steam table and salad bar, disposing of leftovers, trash and garbage in accordance with established policy and procedure.

Patient Services:  Pulls clean dishes, stacks and transports clean dishes and utensils to proper storage area.
Cafeteria Services:  Stacks clean dishes, serving containers and utensils to proper storage.

  • Washes certain items by hand such as pots and pans and records the temperature and sanitizing solution of the 3-compartment sink on the appropriate log.
  • Operates dish machine as needed and knows final rinse temperature.

Patient Services:  Records temperature of the dish machine and chlorine levels and maintains adequate amounts of clean dishes and silverware in the kitchen.

  • Cleans after each meal and/or use, tray line counter and shelves.

Patient Services:  Cleans after each meal and/or use food carts and condiment trays and other items used in patient tray assembly.

  • Performs special cleaning duties as assigned by supervisor. Follows the daily and weekly cleaning assignments.
  • Follows all safety, sanitation and food handling procedures. Knows temperature danger zone, records and maintains proper serving temperatures as well as equipment temperatures. Able to articulate proper food handling as it relates to cross contamination.
  • Acts as cafeteria cashier, maintains necessary cash receipts records and completes accurate cash counting as required.
  • Operates meat slicer, dishwasher, coffee urn, coffeepot, toaster, microwave oven, grill, blender and mixer as necessary.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - Currently enrolled in a Food Service Management course with a minimum of 1 semester completed or 6 months of food service experience

Licenses/Certifications: Current County of San Bernardino Food Handlers Card, ServSafe, or successfully passed a food safety certification examination accredited by the American National Standards Institute.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: Experience in hospital setting.




St. Mary Medical Center (SMMC) is an acute care hospital with 213 beds and over 1,750 employees making it one of the region's largest employers serving communities of the High Desert. The facility was constructed in 1956 and joined the St. Joseph Health System in 1992.

This facility has the only Neonatal Care Unit in the High Desert Accredited by California Children Services and has been granted approval as a Special Hospital with the California Children's Services Community Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. St. Mary was accredited as a primary Stroke Receiving Center in 2018, the only stroke-receiving center in the High Desert.
