Job Summary:  Under general supervision, coordinates the processing, review and application of ICD-9 & ICD-10 coding rule sets, CPT and HCPCS codes to medical records based on documentation provided by the providers and adheres to coding compliance for a specified clinical area. Adheres to strict federal coding rules in selecting codes that appropriately and accurately reflect the condition that the patient had and the medical service that was provided.  Will communicate heavily with Coding/Compliance Dept and coding peers to abstract clinical and statistical data for outcome measure and monitoring. Provides coding education including but not limited to: Patient Representatives, Billing/Collection Specialists, and/or clinical providers in an effort to ensure compliance and capture appropriate revenues.  Assures timely data entry for billing or auditing purposes and performs quality checks of billing information in the applicable computer system(s).

Essential Functions:  
1. Maintains current coding practices utilizing current ICD-9 & ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCs guidelines. Maintenance to include CEU education to keep CPC or RHIT Certification current.
2. Provides technical guidance and leadership to other coding staff; investigates and resolves problems related to coding transactions handled by the department. In order to provide technical quidance to providers, the Central Business Office Coding Department will be responsible for conducting Bi-Annual Evaluations and Management of Chart Audits for each provider; scores, maintains database and reports regularly.
3. Abstracts and retrieves medical data used for evaluation, review, planning of research, in health care, health-related programs, and/or medical investigations and provides to manager or director as directed. 
4. Maintains upgrades and edits of procedure codes and diagnosis codes in the practice management system to prevent denials.  Ensures compliance and appropriate code selection for claim purposes.
5. Responds to inquiries from physicians, staff, and outside agencies and/or individuals regarding coding or charge concern; Maintains standardizations; ensures compliance and appropriate code selection and education for billing purposes. 
6. Thoroughly understands and applies code ranges of medical and patient care data, utilizing established medical coding methodology and procedures.
7. Ensures strict confidentiality of medical and financial records and follows HIPAA guidelines. 
8. Communicates with Coding and Compliance department regularly.
9. Maintains and adheres to the latest coding newsletter libraries in order to provide education and research utilization of coding trends.

Minimum Position Qualifications:   
Education:   High School Diploma of GED
Experience:  1 to 5 years related to the essential functions specified
Training:Maintain CPC or RHIT certificate by obtaining required CEU’s
License/Certification:  CPC-A, CPC or RHIT

Preferred Position Qualifications:   
1. Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology knowledge
2. Minimum 1 year experience in a physician practice setting.
3. CPC  and/or CPC-H or RHIT
